Hi

Am I right in thinking that a conventional wifi extender would come as a 1 piece item that plugs in at it's desired location but would need an ethernet cable running to it from the router?

If the above is true, to eliminate the need to run an ethernet cable, I assume I'd have to buy the homeplugs with wifi functionality? Which as you'd expect can be expensive(ish), upwards of £75 for the pair.

Now, as a workaround, could I buy some cheapo homeplugs on ebay for around £20 a pair then buy an additional wifi extender which can be had for £15 and do the obvious, plug the extender into the homeplug at the other end at the desired location?

This is for a friend on a budget, hence the bodge to save some cash.

Cheers

You can get wireless extenders.

The one I bought (TPlink) was either shit or over-complicated to set up though. Never worked.

In my experience, wireless extenders never really work properly.

In an ideal world, you want a cable between the router and a new access point, same SSID different channel (let it autodetect) to the router. If you CBA to runa cable, use the normal home plugs to connect a router and an access point

I've got the same experience as pow with the wireless extenders but Sam managed to get them working fine from what he posted on here.

Have used some DLink extenders in the past without issue, similarly an old Linksys WRT router running DD-WRT. But you'll probably have better luck with a WAP and a homeplug if you can't get ethernet cabling to it.

I really would go with the hard wired option if you don't want to be round said friends house pissing around with a wifi extender that intermittently works for no reason
