I went to upgrade to the new OSX the other week but only had 3.8GB spare space and it needed nearly 5 so it aborted after a few mins. SInce then, I've added abs max 1GB of music/pics yet now I have barely any free space… has the download got cuaght somewhere or something?? Ive checked FInder and there are no significant new files causing it...

I don't believe partial downloads are stored, have a look under '/Library/Updates' (think that's where they're saved to) and have a look.
Either way, time to start clearing stuff off

What was your previous OS, computer model / year. If you paid for upgrade you get 30 days of help (as far as i know from apple) and they will ring you back so no cost to you, I spent a long time updating my oldish iMac (4+ Hours and the same person stayed on the phone and in the end it worked and still does now)

They could shout slogans down the phone whilst he does it -
"You go OrRob good work"
"There you go OrRob you get those files deleted"
