I think my CV joints may have popped out. When on full lock, or turning up an incline, or up a smalll kerb, i can hear a loud-ish knock from the front of the car. Could it be the CV joints? If so, how do i fix it?

take it to a large empty car park & drive it in a circle on full lock and see if it still clicks
there aint that many miles on your car though is there?
might just be a knackered top mount

its very unlieky your CV joints would go after 38k
and if it occurs going up kerbs or inclines it would signal top mounts

What would cause these to fail in the first place?

Are top mounts just the rubber bit between the strut and the body?
Any idea roughly how much new ones are?

there is a bearing in them which allows the strut to rotate when you turn the steering wheel
they usually aint that dear, new ones for my golf cost me £12 each

I've never really investigated these, do they attach to the car or shock? I cant remember them from when I changed my shocks....

bit of both, they sit on top of the strut/suspesion pillar, the strut then comes up thru them
can u see this pic?

I just thought about it on my way home and its the bit that clamps the top of the spring onto the strut isn't it?
So its a spring clamps and probably air gun job to change them!

close! u'll need the airgun to undo the top nut
then withdraw the strut/spring, you can now lift the top mount from within the engine bay
