Ive heard a really loud banging noise coming from my car recently, id say its done it about 15 times since ive had it, but only in the last 3 months or so. It just does it once, hard to explain - its not an explosion type bang, more like something has just snapped, but the car still works fine! It mainly does it when the revs are a bit low to start off, but it did it the other day when i had the clutch all the way down. Any ideas what it might be?!

could be your brake shoes/pads binding against their contact surfaces, then makin the noise when they free off, if its just as the clutch comes in, this could be whats happening...

would it make a really loud bang? As in loud enough to make people turn round thinking "WTF was that?!"

whereabouts does it come from? Can you tell?
If it was the brakes, you'd feel a tiny bit of resistance, then itd bang and free off. Usually happens when cold...

i swear i can feel it in the pedals, but might be imagination. I thought it might have been the driveshaft or something, but if it did it with the clutch down, then im guessing it cant be as it wouldnt be doing much?

Had it on my car once or twice like a loud bang/backfire coming under the center of the car..when changing gear,it was like an explosion from the center section of the exhaust..funny i couldn't explain it either..nothing wrong tho.

mine did this, as brake disk was warped, so sumtimes, it was pressed against the pads, and if its dampe etc the pads stick to the disk. So wen u move off it goes bang as they separte.
new disks, problem solved.
To check if they r warped, take wheel off, jack up, start, put in gear and watch the disk goin round, if its warped it will b wobbling side to side against the pads slightly

or you could just drive the car at 30mph and just gently apply the brakes feeling for vibrations in the steering & brake pedal

My discs are in need of replacment, they are doing the exact same thing, when left for a while after a long jurney (Say a day or so without being used) the pads stick to the discs and when you pull away there is resistance, asif you have the handbrake on or as if theres a brick under your wheel !
When you pull away, theres a loud bang noise when the pad seperates from the disc.
I noticed mine doing it about a week ago and its dont it twice since, so ive ordered myself a set of Drilled and grooved discs and greenstuff pads Getting fitted after the weekend !.....problem solved !

could be a buggered engine/gearbox mount.
grab your engine and try moving it, shoudn't be more than a inch of travel ( i think its an inch)

It shouldn't move at all if its not on, and vibrate a small amount but not visibly when on.
