I am on Broadband (NTL 600) and i want to share the connection between 3 computers at home. I know i need a router, and how to connect to the computers physically. BUT:
Is setting it up straight forward?
Will the connection seem slow?
I have never done anything in networking, but have quite a bit of experience with computers so any help would be appreciated

Netgear DG814.
NAT router with built in 4 port hub, all set up via web interface. Dead easy. Just enter your login details to the router, configure connected PC's to get an IP automatically via DHCP and shazzam, away ye go.

Setting up is pretty straightforward - you'll plug the PC's into the router, and that will (almost certainly) have an option to use DHCP which will give the PC's IP addresses and point them to the router for the default internet connection.
The connection would only seem noticibly slowr if all 3 were downloading large files at once, rest of the time would be fine

Problem with using machines as a gateway is that the machine in question must be on at all times for others to get the connection.

Ok, let me get this straight......
I plug all the computers into the router, then when i run windows i just set each one up seperately just like i do with a single comuter plugged into the NTL Cable modem

get a router with intergrated switch (say around 4 ports)
plug all the machines into the switch part of the router, if you have a DHCP enabled on the router and told the windows machines to use DHCP then the network will pretty much set its self up. Its all very easy stuff.
so
[computer1]---cat5 lead--->[router/switch]------->internet
/ /
[computer2]-----cat5 lead-----/ /
/
[computer3]-----cat5 lead------/
All that needs to be on is the router and ntl be working and BING any of them 3 computers can access the internet. All three can access at the same time etc.

If you know what you are doing then a network can be up within minutes using windows, though if you have never touch on this ground before it may help to do a bit of reading.
Saying that I believe XP comes with some 'home network' wizard or some shit.

if they all run XP just plug and play, if using DHCP it will set up your network on 192.168 etc and just number machines 2,3,4vetc..

So is there anything i need to be looking for when buying the router? Is this DHCP thing you talk of standard practice with all routers?

just replyed to a simular Q posted anyways.....
ya dont need a router at all
7 ---network cards
1 --8 port switch(cant get a 7 port 1)
1 ---dsl modem
Cables to connect them all
set up your LAN I.E the 7 computers get them all talkin to each other forget about the internet bit for a second
once u have this done desinate one computer (the most powerful one) as your main computer. connector ur dsl modem to this
go to winproxy.com and download winproxy or download a program called winroute
winroute has more features like DHCP but u can use static IP's also.
this program makes the computer connected to the net act like a router however u can still use this computer as normal once u set up winroute. It just sits in your system tray
have a read about it u can set it in serveral different configurations to suite your needs.

NTL? there no probelm with it
i had the above done on a 56K line
yeh slow as sh&^ but it was good for learning
if u have Broadband u'll have no probs with 3-5 users.
should also mention winroute has the NAT option and also has DHCP
