Well you can clean it with carb cleaner, but it might not be dirty but possibly some of the wire in it is broken.
It's basically a 'hot wire anemometer' and has thin bits of wire with a voltage running through them.
I had mine changed under network Q luckily enough but yes it would have cost about £300.
Try and find one in a scrap yard.

try cleaning it first tho...
carb or any solvent based cleaner sparyed over the element.
If the element is visably fooooked, bin it

oh ok, well they always break on corsas, my car used to lose power at certain rpms and often almost stall at lights.... top speed was only 85mph too
Got it fixed and it will do 100 now.

mine is a tube with a matrix of square plastic holes occross it and then there is an L shaped small tube that comes down into the flow further back, i think my meter is up in this smaller pipe.

Interesting - my old Air Flow Meter was a bit screwed - but the one I bought off scottM that I put in to replace it was missing a bit of that wire... seemed to run better at first but has been running crap since...
So what effect is having a little chunk of the grid stuff missing gonna have?

ok the result is we cleaned the air flow meter with carb cleaner and then squirted loads down the air intake pipe straight into the manifold put it all back together and so far so good

i did tell thee all that carb cleaner won't harm the airflow meter. a m8 with a primera gt gained about 15bhp after cleaning airfilter oil from his airflow sensor with carb cleaner

it was running like a dog on a rr day the mechanic sprayed the airflow meter and it gained about 15bhp on the second run, he was running about 180ish at the finish (flywheel).
he binned the pipercross induction kit after that in favour of a cotton gauze type .

I only had 71 bhp with my last air flow meter - I replaced it and got 81 bhp on the rollers - but could of probably just sprayed it instead to be honest.
gonna get carb cleaner tommorrow can't wait
