powersteering makes a funny hissing when on full lock & also the screeching noise which a few others say about seems to still be there... when it screeches for a few seconds, the steering is quite heavy & then it goes back to normal!
hissing is only full lock tho...
anything to worry about? tried beardy's idea of removing the PS fluid cap & turning the wheel a few times to try get any air-locks out, but is still doing it

the hissing noise is normal, mine does it too
mine also makes that annoying "MOOO" sound somtimes when im turning the wheel while car is stationerry!
found out other day that is actually quite loud and can be heard outside aswell!!!  ive heard its a common problem on the Gsi's and might have somthing to do with the powersteering pump???
im going to try that "turning the wheel with power steering bottle cap of" to try get rid of any air locks

Yeah i think its pretty normal to hiss on full lock, my sisters Z3 does it really bad, my Astra foes it a bit

my cav does it
could try 2 things a diff pump "i have one for sale  "
and change the fluid
but i think its pretty common

Its just the pump... my mazda one hisses under the bonnet... Vauxhall ones must hiss extra loud

hmmm come to think about it ive never changed the PAS fluid or topped it up!
could changing this and getting rid of air locks in the bottle get rid of the "mooo" sound???

my escrot van moos like theres 5under there lol, saying that the fluid is getting low :/
completly nothing todo with the topic but i think its normaly for most PAS cars todo it

Our Jeep does it too The engine drops a few revs too normally....

My Civic does it at times, my mums 3 series BMW does it too, so does my stepdads Saab and his 2 vans. Just a common thing when the power steering is under full strain.

hmmm weird
the PS aint really under strain tho when it mooo's, as I've even done it with the front up on stands & it moo'd a lil when I was checking for leaks!
will keep an eye on it but guess if so many people have the hiss & moo it aint something to really worry about!

thats the sound of the PS pump.
it happens when uve reached the limit of the steering rack (full lock) but u insist on exerting unnecessary pressure on the steering wheel (and the pump). Pffft... as if the wheel is gonna turn more if u force it
