to settle a debate:
will the Xbox user get a better experience using a Hi-def T.V?
what is hi-def (basically) and how/when/what will use it?, is it soley tv broadcasts/programmes that are gonna change?

Yes. xbox360 games are all hi-def.
Hi-def is basically a higher resolution.
Sky start broadcasting it next year.
Everything will be hi-def.

It should be.
I haven't seen one in the flesh though to comment.
It should be excatly comparable to running a pc game at say 800x600 then turning the res up to 1280x1024.
It will look better overall yes.

Here's the deal:
DVD Resolution is 720x576 for PAL.
VHS Resolution is about 320x240.
HDTV is 1900x1080 at its highest.
LCD Monitors are normally 1268x1024 ish
Hence HDTV is significantly higher resolution than normal TV. Its like the difference between Cinema (4000 pixels across and a DVD on TV in terms of difference.
Most high-end PC graphics cards can support high-definition, but LCD monitors can't support the highest res. HDTV's however can.
Normal TVs can't show a HD-DVD or game any higher than standard DVD quality. You'll need a new TV to fully appreciate the 360.
TV is 'about' 640x480.

Pal widescreen tv's are 720x576, 4:3 is prob 640x576.

LMAO, you guys are under an illusion that HD is the same as going from B&W to Colour. A good digital transmission isnt much different to HD. Yeah the picture is a wee bit crisper but other than that its not really noticable. IMO the LCD's you find at your local Dixons/Currys etc is rather poor, with very edgy display, more suited to PC applications than HD transmission

Wouldn't dream of buying any sort of TV/DVD equipment from the high street.

I think Plasma and LCD have still got a hell of a long way to go to be worth paying over a grand for.

especially when you consider the low resolutions that most current LCD HD TV's are subject to. Try shopping in America - their HD TV's are proper HD....

been reading some sites and came up with Jim theory
TVs work on "lines"...........apparantley
True HD is 1080 lines
Xbox games will be written in that format, but can still be used on normal TV
most "HD ready" tv's being sold won't be able to show true HD @1080 lines , more like 720lines
Only v.expensive ones will be real HD
There it is, Jim theory
think tv at the mo was around 400ish lines

I'd personally wait till at least next year when prices should have came dwn a bit.
But as with everything if you waited to get the latest technology you'd be waiting forever.

Wouldn't agree with you on this one - WHen you say a good digital signal - care to expand on this - DO you mean DVD or breadcast? Both Freeview & Sky compress most channels quite a lot. BBC is often quite good.
Watching a film in HD is much better than PAL i.e. Spiderman2 the pictures are WAY crisper than even the DVD. I get the feeling you have not seen enough HD footage to realise how good it is.
As for the LCDs in dixons currys not being any good, OK they are not 1920x1080 but some of them are still very impressive i.e. the current Samsung 26/32/40" range is good. (The one MS are using to promo the XBox360)
Don't rely on stuff you see in any shops, including manufacturers demos. A friend is an editor and was commisioned to produce a new HD demo to show off screens as the ones that some of the manufactures had made were crap i.e. theres a Philips one which he showed me in full HD, then he showed one he had done and it looked much better.
