New PC that I got last week.
when i click on a link with a clip in it, it's shows the clip in a weird colour scale sort of way...It's very trippy 
It's all reds and greens
any ideas

You most likely have a problem with codecs.
That'll play anything apart from real media and quicktime.

it's not in any one player though, happeing in them all....media player,quicktime etc etc

If you've not got the proper codecs installed the players might be just using the nearest one that can't render it properly.
There could be other causes but i'd try the codecs option 1st.
That file there is instead of loads of different codecs.
Still use any of your normal players to play th efilms.

down loaded and ran that John but still not working
that vid was through 'putfile'..
is that quicktime?

Think it depends what it was uploaded as.
Not sure if it converts it.

google "codec pack" - you can download a load of codecs in one go.

ffdshow saves the need for installing loads of codecs.
Codecs in they packs often have conflicts.
For real and quicktime just download the alternatives.
