what could cause such drastic power loss?? clutch maybe??
sorry for lecture

i cant check the cambelt myself, but this mechanic is sound, should be fine, the rattling has certainly gone and it is quicker than before lol. its had a brand new battery on also.
it generally in first and second... when you TRY to set off from lights you just cant lol, it rolls forward no faster than if you was pushing it on your own ! no joke! lol then all of a sudden at about bloody 4k revs, all the power comes at once, and obviously all at once it throws you back into your seat and your off like a mofo lol.
its a pain in the arse honeslty, will do paper clip test tomora if i can but its not going to tell me much i dont think.
Thanks

defo not your mass airflow meter as you wont have 1, I would remove induction kit (if fitted) and reset ecu.

I would try an ecu reset and switch to std airbox over a part that will cost £60+ from vauxhall

if your crank sensor was faulty it wouldnt even start.

pos. vacuum leak around the manifold, or maybe even a dodgy coil pack??
might be worth checking plugs/leads and if you know someone with a spare coilpack, check that too

I have the same car as you (1.4 16V) and had the same problem but not as serious. Took off the viper induction and reset the ecu. Now its fine.

Im pretty sure that if the crank sensor is shagged then the hall/knock sensor takes over instead and the ECU can get a reading from that.
Mike, let Rich know what sensors you need as there is a full 1.4 16v up the unit left from a conversion

When you say power loss for a few seconds does it bog down and then suddenly take off as normal?
I had this on my 1.6, changed plug leads and cured it a massive difference.
