My PC keeps freezing and need help finding out why as built it myself and even though all parts arefrom same shop i have to find out what is wrong myself and take that part for replacement.

wonder if any tips to try find out what it is

wondering if its memory problems, got two 256mb sticks might run it with just one at a time see if thats the probelm, but was wondering if there is software to use to test memory?

rest of spec is:

corsair ram PC3200 2 * 256mb
maxtor SATA HDD
AMD xp2800
powercolor ati radeon 9800 AIW
asus a7n8x-e deluxe motherboard

can pause before windows boots up but rarely (blue bar pauses for bit then carries on)

will try taking each stick ram out and running each one seperately

is there any software that can use to help check?

might go mums later and swap ram over with hers see if that clears it up

Could be a number of things. If it still does it then try it without the graphics card. If that doesnt work then scan your HDD for errors? What software have you got installed?

Check the fan on the graphics card. On the ATI 9600 XT i had the fan went and was causing the computer to lose power and power back up.

Could be the memory too, try one chip at a time.

What PSU do you have?

Random problems are in most cases memory.

http://www.memtest86.com/ for testing memory

Might not even be dodgy ram, but just an incompatibility between ram and board.

Does it randomly happen or when you do a certain task?

Have you checked the running temp of the motherboard and cpu while the machine is idle and doing a CPU/GPU intensive task?

Its quite possbile its memory like others are suggesting, its also possible that the box is overheating due to the cooling setup not meeting the requirements it needs.

I've had this in the past, it was a fan not moving/attached as the cable had been snagged, causing the box to heat up as soon as it was booted.
