Get it rolling up into 3rd, accelerate gently then let it slow down without using brakes and apply gentle pressure on the gear lever as though you're changing to 4th but keep your foot off the clutch. When you've matched revs it should slip straight across - if that's the case, your clutch is buggered. If not, it could be your linkage instead.
Do it on a quiet road obviously.

Also if your clutch was worn, you'd be putting the revs on, but not gaining speed, and have a nice burning smell whilst driving.

9 times out of 10 it will be the gear selector linkage. its an easy 10 min job, might as well adjust the clutch cable while you are there. that could be the other cause. buy a haynes manual for £12 and theres a full instruction of how to do both.
a worn out clutch is more likely to slip than cause problems selecting gears.
