Just built a system at work with a Conroe X6800, clocked it up to 3.4ghz and also got a 7950 in it ( dual 7900 card for quad sli ).
Rigged it up and got it running 3d mark 2001se. Haha, it kept getting 999fps so its gone off the counter rofl.
Amazing, im quite liking the conroe chips now, very powerfull.
p.s im still an amd man but the conroe chip has made me think about the rivalry.
Conroe poo's all over the fx 62 by the way.

conroe is the way to go right now. AMD wont have the K8L till mid 2007.
I'd think about buying a conroe, but all my gaming is done at 1920*1200, so CPUs do little for me, mainly all video card at that res. Bout time the G80/R600 came out

well this system that i built has to be on border-line one of the best systems out in the uk.
Might put an extra 7950 gx2 in there and see what it gets on 3d mark.
i wrekon if i had an aftermarket fan for the processor i could push it alot more.

The same as me, but you will find games like FEAR, HL2, Prey are starting to rely on your processor too.
Admittedly if you have a sweet gfx card as i do, it makes it a heck of alot easier.

tbh, 3dmark 2001 is very basic, and 5 years ago the graphics/cpu was nothing compared to what it is today.
Download 3dmark 2005 from a torrent site and run that and tell us your score. Atleast we will be able to compare it to something modern

3d mark 2001 se is the best program to find any flaws in the machine.
If a machine has a problem, 3d mark 2001 will crash out.
Happened so many times, 3d mark 2003 and 2005 dont seem to pick up on it that much.
The score in 2001 se was 50,000..............yes 50,000

indeed, but if you are trying to impress us by the machine, why are you talking about using a program to find bugs/flaws?
install 3dmark 2005 which is a heavy benchmark, give us the score and i can atleast compare it to my machine.
that score means scuff all to me, as i aint used 3dmark 2001 for... 5 years

Yeah, Ive use an Athlon 64 X2 4400+ however, and as upcoming games are going to start being mutli threaded, that wiill provide the extra power any newer games will be needed for the next year or two. Ive never encounted a problem with my CPU holding me back yet. I use a Geforce 7800 GTX 256 (got it last July), want to upgrade it but im waiting for the DX 10 cards to come out. Hopefully only another 2-3 months to wait.

Too expensive for what they are though. To be honest i'd buy a E6600 (maybe an E6700) i'd i was getting a conroe. They OC just about as well and have the same cache and everything (unlocked multipliers arent a big deal). The Extremes just like the FX series are just overpriced CPUs for people who want to tell their mates they have the super mega extreme quad turbo gti edition of any given hardware . The Extreme is only 260MHz faster than an E6700, but is nearing double the price (£411 vs £782). I wouldnt pay an extra £371 for something that will take me 10 seconds to do in the BIOS .

why spend £600 on a cpu and over clock it?
What application or Game actually requires or even benifits from that extra gain?
The only thing i can think of is large rendering applications.

Depends what you use really. Games will see some small boost depend at what res you play in. Encoding will see a massive boost.
