Thermostat. They are really easy to replace, all you need is to go to motorworld, or halfords and get one. Around £10 iirc. Then just get some more coolant stuff for when you loose soome when the thermostat comes out.

To test the theremostat, take it out, the put it in some boiling water out of the kettle, if its working you should see it open up. If it doesnt open up its broken. Also the fan may not come on if the thermostat is broken.

If the thermostat doesnt open then the fan would be completely useless anyway. You can tell if a thermostat doesnt open just by the engine temp really. If the engine temp goes very high (as in, up to the red) under normal driving without being stuck in traffic then its almost certainly the thermostat. If it goes abit high, like 96-98 or so but stays there then it probabaly isnt the thermostat.
