I need to purchase 4 computers from for word processing, etc though 2 will be needed for software development using visual studio mainly.
All need to be networked to a centeral server either wireless or cat5 not overly fussed on which.
Now I am torn between 4 cheapish laptops or four desktops (either dell or built myself)
Can't make up my mind, which would you choose.

Laptops - More versitle for working on the move and just as powerful as a desktop for what you are looking to do.
Although if they are going to be office based only then desktops as they will be cheaper and easier to upgrade in the future.
Really depends if you would benifit from the mobility of a laptop

Thats the problem mobility is not really an issue but would be nice to have the option there.
Plus I could also take them home at night if thieft became an issue.

The only other problem ith laptop is people will start to want to work from home etc. and have loads of work stored on the laptop and not on the main server. Then if something happens to the Laptop bye bye work!!

IMHO - if you go with laptops then get some dell ones, they are decent and come with good warranties.
If you are going with PCs, then go with HP, they make very decent boxes plus as you are software developing you might want to slot a Matrox 4-way card in and get an extra few displays
