quote:
If the Dell has the Symantec restore partitition (and by your description it sounds as if it does), (Dell Restore by Symantec is available on Dimension and Inspirion systems that shipped on or after 7/16/2004 in the Americas), to access the partition:
1. Power the computer on
2. When the Dell screen appears press and hold the <Ctrl> key on the keyboard, press the <F11> key, then release them both at the same time.
The Dell Restore by Symantec window appears.
NOTE: Press the keys only one time. If you press them more than once, a keyboard error occurs and the process has to be initiated again.
3.Click the Restore button or press the <Tab> key to highlight Restore and press the enter key.
A caution message appears advising that all data will be lost.
4.Click the Confirm button or press the <Tab> key to highlight Confirm and press the enter key.
The Progress window appears. Once the process is begun, Dell PC Restore usually takes only 8 to 10 minutes to complete.
When the restore is complete, the message The system recovery process was successful appears.
5. Click the Finish button or press <Tab> key to highlight Finish and press the <Enter> key.
The computer will restart.
Your software is now as it was when you first received your computer.
NOTE: After the Operating System has been restored, it is important to run Windows Update as soon as possible to bring the system to the latest level of security.
Hope this helps.

Sorry about that mate - slight error in the copy and pasting
have you tryed F8 (key to get into the safe-mode options) and see if there are any extra options?
If you want to try that i think you just need to keep pressing F8 from when the PC is switched til the menu comes up (eg while it does the RAM checks etc)

this is what i have in my owners manual for my inspiron 9300
To use PC Restore:
1 Turn on the computer.
During the boot process, a blue bar with www.dell.com appears at the top of the screen.
2 Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press <Ctrl><F11>.
If you do not press <Ctrl><F11> in time, let the computer finish starting, and then restart
the computer again.
NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot in the following step.
3 On the next screen that appears, click Restore.
4 On the next screen, click Confirm.
The restore process takes approximately 6–10 minutes to complete.
5 When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer.
NOTE: Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer completely
reboot.
6 When prompted, click Yes.
The computer restarts. Because the computer is restored to its original operating state, the
screens that appear, such as the End User License Agreement, are the same ones that
appeared the first time the computer was turned on.
7 Click Next.
The System Restore screen appears and the computer restarts.
8 After the computer restarts, click OK.

None of the pissin drivers work on the Dell site so wanna restore it.
It's pissing me right off now! Managed to boot the Ghost image by making the partition active using Partition Magic. However it runs through nicely but then when it reboots say there's a DLL file missing to boot Windows.
My ideas was to copy a working DLL file over from my laptop or desktop to the dell one, BUT as it is a NTFS partition i cannot read the disk using a Dos boot disk. So i thought, lets change it to FAT32 but then the restore wouldn't take place. Pissed me off so i had to come away for a bit
abdus, just added you to MSN. Come online and help me

Took the hard drive out and connected it to my desktop PC using a converter my mate had. Put the Ghost Image on my hard drive, created a new partition on the laptop hard drive and run the image.
Amazingly worked
