I take it people do this to restore the shape of the bore on an engine that has done a fair few miles?

Once this has been done do you need to use 0.5mm larger pistons, or would you use new piston rings?

How much would you think it would cols to get a block bored out and what kind of places do stuff like this?

There's a place round here that bored my mates XE out to 2.1 and skimmed my head - Nuneaton Cylinder Rebores.

They do a great job if you cant find someone back home to do it

Cool I want my engine to be in really good condition... I have found a block too that I might buy also. The guy has said it's been machined +40. I have no idea what that means so if anyone knows then let me know

vauxhall only sell 2 standards - strange in no

pistons they only do overbore (+0.5mm)
then rings you would get +0.5 overbore ones

all this is on a c16xe - which i looked into

You can just hone the bores, and fit new std size piston rings.

But as already said if you have it bored 0.5mm you will need +0.5mm pistons and rings.

What would you need if the block had a 1.0mm overbore? Do vauxhall do 1.0mm overbore pistons? I can't seem to find much info...

Standard bore size is 86mm right?

Aftermarket pistons are pretty expensive aren't they... I am not sure if I will go for this block because I don't really need a set of £500 forged pistons - unless you can get oversized standard spec ones?

i would never replace rings and or pistons with out a re bore as i have seen to many exspensive engines passing oil through a honed bore and ending up being broken for parts

I think I might just find a standard block and do a 0.5mm re-bore on it and use new pistons... The only other thing I might be doing to this engine is using some twin 45's on it to, ahem... Loose the wiring loom to make the engine bay tidy

personally I wouldnt buy a block that has had an overbore as you will never know what has been done to it unless you get it all checked and measured. it would be cheaper to get a block in good condition, hone it and then get it measured. then use standard pistons with new standard rings.

Thats my concerns exactly. Especially if the block hasn't been bored right too...

I have found a few blocks local to me which I am enquiring about now and I think I will go down the standard route.

Are there any differences in crankshafts between engines - i.e. early and late type, as the timing belt and other stuff if slightly different...

+40 probably means it's had 40thou decked from the top ?

there's a good article on the sbd website about the differences between early and late engines. cranks are slightly different iirc.
