For a run of the mill flat...1 bed...nothing special...in london itself (battersea, clapham, etc) your talking minimum £900 PCM....then there is council tax on top...bills etc...

How far are you prepared to commute?
Farnborough and Aldershot are cheap, about 30 mins direct link to Waterloo and its much nicer than living in a city.

Im thinking this...whats the rough average monthly cost to commute?? Say for a 40 min journey into Covent Garden?

Although arguable -- I live in central London (work in the City) and own a 2 bed flat. Get to work in 15-20 mins and don't pay/wait for trains.
If I had stayed back in St Albans and commuted the flat may have cost me £50k less, but both me and my g/f would be paying £3k each for a rail season ticket. I figured I'd prefer to plough the money into property, than paying stupid amounts for a train everyday!

Tim is on the same lines as my thinking...I really cant face handing over hundreds a month just for the pleasure of standing squashed into a train car like cattle...

I live in Bow. Great access to the City and Canary Wharf (Tube, DLR, Buses, or walk) but if I had to get to Covent Garden it's probably not the easiest route (although I suppose Holborn is easy to get to and then walk 5 minutes).
If you don't mind tubes then there's some cheaper places on the Picadilly line I think. If you wanna be able to walk or get a bus it's probably just worth spending a while on the TFL website and working out where's convenient for your work. Tubes are only £90 a month-ish -- far better than overground season tickets.

I know the Piccadilly line...can you tell me what areas along this route are going to be cheapish?

Kings Cross/Holloway Road will be cheap. Not sure I'd want to live on Holloway Road though, although there's MASSIVE regeneration.
Failing that going west there's Hammersmith which is cheapish, although I'm a bit more of a fan of North/East London

Of have the best of both worlds.
Live outside london, buy a motorcycle, commute in on that.
Suffer with no tube, no fat stinky guy sharing his arsecheek on your chair on the train, no busses with bombs, no hassle. Can do all the OT you want without worry about transport, if your on flexitime you can come in early and leave before the rush, and you can also use your bike in the evenings and weekends and enjoy a ride then.
Downsides...
Petrol keeps going up.
Quite dangerous for an in-experienced rider.
Errrrrr, thats it. I don't get wet (unless its REALLY tipping it down), if its sunny i wear my leathers and stay nice and cool, you are outside and enjoying the weather, not stuck on public transport.
Its awesome. London sucks. Living in the country is so much better, but that opinion depends on what your into.

Quite a few new developments in woolwich and surrounding areas. im living with my sister who commutes into the city every morning and she says its about a half hour journey depending on what time she leaves. i used to commute to mayfair everyday and that used to take about an hour but thats because i left at the worst possible time.

Bike license is easy, take it before the laws change and make it MUCH harder.
Theres loads of bike bays in london. By tfarthe best way to get about is on a scoote (just need a CBT), but u'll look like all the other fags on peds up here that look like they've been shot out a cannonball.

Like Daimo said, get a 125 Scooter on a CBT, as long as you don't use the motorway you will be fine.

I will be working as a solicitor...so dont fancy driving into work in the wind and rain in a suit...I know you can wear waterproofs etc...but what about my hair too? I need to look respectable...
