Moved into my student house and only jsut realised we havent got a hand rail or banister etc on the stairs and they are very steep, especially when u are drunk. Just wondering on the legality of rented houses and stair rails (dont know where to look)

if you can still walk up stairs when drunk then you arent drunk enough.
Stay downstairs until you have to crawl up them.

think you need a hand rail mate but i'll check that for you later. i've been in plenty of houses that dont have one but they are not rented.

just asked my old man who rents houses and he also makes hand rails and shit and he says yes there should be a hand rail.
he actually said it must be manufactured from material that is comfortable to hold, and not cold to the touch, it should be stood off the wall between 40 and 70mm and it should continue for a minimum of 300mm past the top and bottom treads. also if your stair case is over 900mm wide you need a second hand rail on the other side.
so there!

wow thats very specific lol, as you can see i dont think the stairs are wider than 9m lol, in fact they are bloody narrow. is it actually illegal though to not have one, like technically, dont want to make myself look like a twat if i ring up the letting agents

you have a wall each side to fall onto
I think it might be only for open staircases? where you can fall over edge that handrails are needed...might be wrong though.

I would ask for one just because you want one before you start quoting the law. Nice to be able to fall back on some facts though.

take a look at This link. Its part M of the building regs. I'm pretty sure your answer will be in this document but as its 85 pages long I haven't had time to find the specific section.

looked at pages 40 - 45 and 65 - 68 (seemed reasonable, checking the index) and didnt seem to give anything helpful. i reckon though if they said it straight they could easily cut 30 pages out of it
