Anyone on here any good at it? I'm thinking of building myself a new tv cabinet (4 ft wide, 2 high and deep) as I can't find an original I like. I'd be using a combo of rosewood verneer and some chrome/alu handles for the drawers. Now I have no experience of major tasks (apart from woodwork at school about 10 years back!)

Is this too ambitious or can I do it with a bit of reading/planning?

Don't see why not, with the right tools a good plan and some patience.

Go for it

This is what I'm thinking - I guess most of it is piss easy but the joints could be the tricky part (and collapse of my tv )

See which ones you want for the cabinet and I'm sure you can find more specific info on how to proceed etc..

Cheers mate will have a look Here's the design below, basic but provides the room needed for sky/x box etc without the need to put them away in cupboards.

Need to address the feet situation though, it's low for a reason so trying to think of a way for it to sit rather than sitting on it's belly

If I can make a wooden cabinet that holds a 7ft x 2.5ft x 2ft fish tank (couple tonne of water) then you can make one strong enough to hold a TV

It's not so much the strength Cosmo, it's more the finish - I'm very fussy, so it needs to be a quality piece which I'm not confident I can produce.

Yeah, totally understand that, was more referring to your point about the joints and it collapsing with your TV

Making a nice tidy joint is def going to be your hardest job. Using solid wood (rather than verneer) makes it easier as can correct mistakes better

We'll see Steve, I'll wadger you if you like

Yeah I agree Cosmo but solid Rosewood (danish) will be impossible to get as you can't get it anymore so it has to be a veneer over a hardish wood.

Don't think that would look as good, I have a few original danish rosewood things you see and it'll look funny if it isn't spot on

Its because of the lack of people doing it anymore! Something easy like that is a piece of piss to do...the harder stuff is where proper skill is needed.

i've alway found wood work to be difficult. i wouldn't even attempt to build an item of furniture without access to a workshop with a table saw etc.

I think the main problem is going to use the veneer, making the actual structure shouldn't be too hard

Plan out all sizes needed, go to a wood yard and get them to cut pieces to size and they MAY also be able to verneer it for you as would imagine they'd have a vacuum press/bag, etc.

Job done, just put it together like an IKEA flat pack

Yeah but I'm hoping to use original 1970s veneer as the patina will be nicer than using brand new stuff I was thinking same as you though, much easier.
