Another day in the life of my Corsa
Was going along the motorway and the speedo just stopped working. Then as I slowed down coming off the slip road it just cut out. But started straight back up. As I pulled up to the lights it cut out again, and started straight up. As I came to traffic it idled for a second then cut out again.
What the fuck? R1CH says it's a speed sensor on the passenger side driveshaft. Probably needs cleaned. Too dark too look at the driveshaft now so it'll have to wait till tomorrow.
Anyone had this problem before to give tips or other possible faults? Will have a go at paperclip test tomorrow as ECU light came on.

It maybe that the speedo cable has snapped or come off.
Genral rule is that if the speedo is not working the car will not run properly and cut out etc as you have mentiond

Fix the Speedo and it will be 100% fine.
Engine needs to know what speed it's doing to run correctly. ECU light is on because it can't detect the speed reading.

I don't think Vauxhall are open tomorrow either. May try the breakers, even if it's broken it's good to have a go without worrying about breaking other stuff cause you can just leave it halfway through

It's weird. It doesn't even do it all the time. And ECU light goes on and off randomly? Surely it'd do it all the time and the light would be on all the time? Confused. Just too much of a coincidence with the speedo stopping working then next time I slow down it cuts out I guess.

Is the speedo problem intermitant? If so it may mean that you have electric driven dials rather then cable like my old corsa did. That was just a case of cleaning up the connection block behind the dials.
In which case it wont be such a problem for the car as it will still know what speed its doing just wont show it on the dials
So that points to somthing else

Nah the speedo doesn't work at all, just that sometimes it will idle and sometimes it won't.
Going to have a go at reading the ECU fault codes now.

OK it threw out codes 24 & 34.
24 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) (No speed signal or low voltage)
34 Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor (Low voltage)
So the VSS is exactly what R1CH said, so I'll have a look for that in a minute. Hopefully it's the sensor and not the speedo cable.

Sourced the problem, speedo cable snapped. Took clocks off and went along and it wasn't turning. So pulled it and it came out about half a metre and was snapped.
A job for tomorrow now.

well at least you know what it is now fit a new cable and see how it goes. May be worth looking at the MAP sensor afterwards if its still running not quite right

I never noticed a problem before and it's not down on power or anything. What would that affect? It says it's low voltage yet the battery is absolutely fine etc

Anyone got any tips on replacing the Speedo Cable?
I have no skin on my knuckles from attempting it. I got both ends disconnected but can't get it out. I pull either end and it'll only stretch so far

If its a standard vauxhall speedo cable there is a join in it just on the engine side of the bulkhead, you can unclip it there and change half of it leaving the grommet in place if its the engine side thats gone.
If youve got a non genuine speedo cable then you will have to push the grommet out, you can see it if you get your head in the drivers footwell and follow the cable. bit of an awkward job though, especially getting it back in!

Yeah I can't even get it out.
Was thinking of just getting a garage to do it. I managed to drive it to work for 35 miles so I can cope for a few days till garages resume as normal. Just wondering how much they'll charge as it's so fiddly.
I usually would do all the work on my car but I'm defeated
