Hey,
Basically im doing some coursework for CAD and im stuck on some things and for the love of god cant remember what some things do. As iv never exactly been a whizkid on AutoCAD
Does anyone know what these functions are and how to perform them?
Trim and Erase
Scale
Chamfer
Layers and Lines
Mirror
I know a couple but not enough to make a sentance. Plus i got a bit of help from the teacher so dont know what the functions actually do.
If anyone could help that would be great.

trim and erase is to erase/shorten lines or sketches.
scale is to pick a selected sketch and the basically producing a specified scaled down or scaled up sketch.
mirror is obivouly mirroring a sketch or an action.

I'm ace 
Erase has its own icon - pencil with a rubber on, or you can click an item and press delete to get rid of it.
Scale has its own icon.
As does Chamfer, and mirror.
Lines too, click the button, click a start point, click and end point, press esc to cancel.
Layers have a dialog button on the top left of the screen - opens up a new dialog. Can easily rename, add and delete layers.
Anything else?

Chamfer creates, well a chamfer to what ever distance you specify.
Layers are for putting different components of the drawing into. You can then turn them off individually, edit whole layer colours, linetypes, line thicknesses.
I use it everyday but trying to explain it or teach someone else how to use it is a totally different ballgame so I'm not going to be much help

Too used to it for my own good.
Have you not got a copy to use? Its much easier.........everything has its own icon, you just click that and the status bar (at the bottom of the screen, above the windows task bar) tells you what it wants you to do.

I'm an AutoCad draughtsman.
To trim, first select the line you want to trim TO, not the actual line you're trimming. Then right-click to confirm your line selection, then left-click the line you're wanting to trim.
Scale... if you scale your item at 0.5, this will be half the size, 1.5 would be one and a half times the size, for example.

On other thing though is that most of the time you'd never use chamfer, unless you specifically want the corner cut at 45 degrees.
I always use fillet instead, with the radius distance set at 0. Its a better habit I find.

Erase:
Press erase Icon (as I described earlier)
Status bar says 'Select objects:'
Click an item to be deleted
Status bar says 'Select objects:1 found'
Right click and enter - item disappears.
OR
without a command running click an item to be removed - it will show 3 blue squares alone it (most of the time).
Press delete and it will go.
Someone else can do the rest, I've been up far too long for this

I've just found a manual that details alot of the commands and how they are performed. Was what was given to me when I started college. Gives description of what the command does then how you do it.
I can type up the bits you listed above if you want?

im terrible at explaining but i'll have a quick go:
Trim and Erase
This is used if you want to trim to an entity or trim between entities (i.e trim a line which runs through a box or circle). It also allows you to trim past a certain point, i.e a crossed line.
Select the trim button, then select the object of reference you want to trim to or around, confirm selection then click the item/line you actually wish to trim.
Scale
Exactly as it says, allows you to scale an object up or down by a certain level.
Select the scale button, select the object(s), confirm selection and either scale by a reference (entering a value) or by using the mouse from point to another.
Chamfer
I think im going to get this mixed up with fillet, so i wont answer it
Layers & Lines
This could do with a read up as its quite a big part.
You can create layers and have different objects on different layers. This allows you to hide objects that the customer may not wish to see. Different layers can have different properties such as colour, weight, line type etc.
There is a layers button which allows you to create/modify/delete layers.
Mirror
This allows you to simply mirror an object.
Select the mirror button, select the object, confirm the selection, select your 1st reference point of mirroring, followed by the second (i.e horizontal/vertical movement) and confirm the reference point.
Finally confirm y/n as to whether you want to delete the original object.

I doubt anybody that properly uses autocad a lot still uses it by clicking on the icons, its much quicker with the keyboard shortcuts which are picked up pretty quickly

hmmm.. im not sure I agree simon. The fashion I have the buttons laied out means everything is just a minor movement away. its much quicker imo then typing commands in.

I use a bit of everything, depends on the command really Some are quicker/easier clicking on icons, others by typing in the keyboard.
