i'll just give it an oil change and put some decent oil in it and if the head gasket goes it goes, then that will give me an excuse to get the mk IV GSI iv longed for

if you only use it for short stints then this will happen, take it for a gentle drive down a motorway, keep it at about 60 for 10 to 20 miles and check the oil again, sounds like your just getting condensation. Check the coolant for level, and any mayo...

im driving bout 10 miles to work everyday on motorway btwn 65-75mph, ive kept a close eye on coolant, still clear and not lost a drop but still have mayo oil under oil cap, wiped away the mayo twice but the sh*t still comes back.
is the condensation caused by sitting stationary with engine running for long periods of time??

I wouldn't be so quick to condemn the headgasket, if you havent lost a drop of coolant then its obviously not the coolant mixing with the oil which only leaves condensation

these and the 1.2, 1.4 8 valve engines are overcooled, also whilst travelling there is cold air coming into the engine bay via the front grill which will also cool the engine casing the mayo under the filler cap, the only time you need to worry about head gasket failure is when the engine temperature rises far too quickly and when the coolant is lost or has an oily rainbow like film on the top, also check for mayo on the end of the dipstick, as this is a sure sign of HG failure

Dont jump to the conclusion of the headgasket, I have mayo under the oil cap and its mainly becuase of (so im told) of the short journeys i always make. and becuase of what baz says above which i just found out, mine's a 1.2 8v.

Im not a mechanic but id imagine you would have bigger (and more obvious) signs if your headgasket was going.

what sort of milage do you do if the car does not that many miles it can be the build up of condensatio in your rocker cover dripping into the oil arround the cams then being splashed about to make the mayo like substance. best thing to do is get it coolant pressure tested this will tell you if head gasket has gone
