Can someone explain to me how you go about setting a simple one up, it will have limited numbers using it at any one time and doesn't need to be all singing all dancing. Also what is the deal if you have already got a site name and space bought and paid for (e.g. we have a simple website), can you buy a solution to bolt onto your site?!
Sorry I really haven't got a clue about this and I'm looking at setting up one for the company I work for, we do market research and we would like a BB to invite specific people to in order to dicuss certain products and services

BB? Bulletin Board?
First, find out whether or not your hosting has PHP and MySQL.
If it does, I'd advise phpBB.
Send me your FTP details and I'll install it for you and get you up and running.

Buy a domain and hosting (go for a linux hosting as it's cheaper). If it has cPanel then usually theres an option to install phpBB (or similar), takes a few clicks and you have it setup! If not, then it's a manual install job, a little fiddly but R'TFM' and it's problem solved!
Can recommend tsohost.co.uk for hosting, prices are ridiculously cheap for UK hosting and for what you get (eg: £50 a year for 10GB space and 125GB monthly bandwidth) - remember don't go for a host that blast unlimited around, theres always a catch!

1. Buy domain with PHP and MySQL
2. Download PHPBB3 (google it)
3. Upload to your space with an FPT client (Smart FTP) to the root, or where ever you want
4. Follow the instructions on the PHPBB3 site to install.

My host has unlimited everything and if they can't provide the unlimited they'll refund you, not a bad deal.

They'll also be more than enough for what Tom is wanting, and they have a button to install phpbb.

I've just bought a reseller account and I've paid up-front for 2 years, so if you want me to host you cheaply and install everything for you, let me know.

There T&C -
quote:
Fast Hosting Direct operates a fair use policy and therefore offers unrestricted use of bandwidth. However, should your bandwidth reach the points where it has an adverse affect on other clients we reserve the right to disable your site until you can reduce your bandwidth usage.
It isn't unlimited, i'm sure they would throw fits if you were hosting a huge site.
Luke - What are you offering? Prices? Who did you host with?

They will refund you if that is the case though, so although not unlimited if the site outgrows the hosting you get your money back and go elsewhere, not a bad deal.
