 got more stuff installed recently and its made the computer slower what can i change to make it quicker again?

Resist the temptation of clicking on every popup you see - despite them saying you have won a million bucks, or installing crappy software from dodgy suppliers which run in the background.

dont have any pop ups they all get blocked
by crap installed i mean photoshop, microsoft office, and few other items of software that i actually use/need
nothing uneccesary on there tbh.

Use msconfig to disable any startup applications you don need i.e.
iTunesHelper, Office Tools, Adobe Updater
Normally there are a load of applications which you don't need to run to use an application

Get a new HDD, start a fresh. That is what I did. My computer was so slow because the HDD was worn out, creaking, groaning and making all kinds of funky noises. Computer runs like new now

all bits are less than a year old so shouldnt need changing. but ill check the start up things.
anyone know how i can find out what is needed and what isnt needed on start up?

try running this too:

will tell you if you can upgrade your ram.. should speed things up a little bit

It'll say what the stuff running is but if theres something you're not sure about, leave it. You should know some of the stuff ya don't need like iPlayer etc.

Mine was over 3 years old. And was really really loud. I couldn't look through pictures etc without it lagging. Thought I'd need to replace my CPU and ram, but went for the HDD as a recommendation from a Mac Genius mate and it's fine

What your mac genius mate done was got you to spend money you didn't need probably.
A format of the original one would have done the same job.

Except I had tried that recently to no avail. Trust me, the HDD was fucked. The current HDD I have is silent. This one was really loud, and when doing a full system scan via McAfee, you could here it through the floor in the living room.

If the hdd was physically faulty thats a differnt matter, well done to him for spotting that the noisy hdd may have been the cause
That doesn't sound like the case here though.

Turned on every day bar the odd holiday for 2 weeks each year. Heavy gaming for the first 1.5 years of life.

I know this may not be the case, but there was no inclination as to the age of the PC. All I was saying is that simply replacing the HDD can work wonders, instead of completely new system

You know the worst thing you can possibly do to a PC is turn it off.
Having said that, I do all that stuff too Deano and my HDD hasn't showed sign of fault in the 3 years I've had it. Prehaps yours was a shitty make whereas mine is not.

Mac Genius says it all. Don't forget that Mac people usually spend an extra £300 for a slightly larger HDD and an extra GB of RAM when they buy thier computers. Also, whenever something goes wrong they usually seem to think that thier computers are so advanced they can't slot in a new HDD themself or fit some more or some larger RAM.
A 3 year old HDD isn't that old either. I've got one in my computer that's probably double that now. Can't even remember what computer it came out of now...

HDD was (directly for PC spec) "160GB MAXTOR CALYPSO 8MB CACHE 7200RPM SATA HDD" which cost £55.95 exc VAT back in 2004.
It was definitely fucked, as my computer is absolutely fine and stable now

I've been using a Western Digital Raptor for the last 3 years, at the time it was the fastest in the world. Not very big though @ 74GB.
