See the below image. I have a HD TV, Cable, Xbox, and DVD player all hooked up.

I cannot for the life of me, get the following things to work:

1. All speakers working when watching Cable
2. All speakers working when playing on the Xbox

Regarding #1, I can choose 2 different options for sound when pressing "Surround" on my DVD remote.

The 2 options are: "DOLBYPLII", and "STEREO".

When I choose "DOLBYPLII" I get one speaker below my TV working.

When I choose "STEREO", I get the 2 speakers to the left and right of the TV working.

All 5 speakers are working fine when I'm watching a DVD.

Where am I going wrong? Do I need to buy another cable or something?

As per the subject title, 20 quid in anyones account who can sort this out.

WHat type of cable do u have going from your dvd player to your surround? If it is optical, does your tv have optical out? if so, connect that to the tv rather than the dvd player.

Or is your dvd player your amp?

There are loads of cables with squares on each of them that are connected from the back of the dvd player to the surround - red square, green square, blue, red, grey, purple - each one has a name above it IE: "Front left", "rear right", etc

There's nothing else connecting the TV to the DVD player other than the HD Cable

the problem is the only source plugged into your surround sound is your dvd player, to get the xbox and cable to work you'd need to plug red/yellow from your xbox into SS, your cable _should_ work aslong as your dvd player is turned on

Red and Yellow from the Xbox to the SS? I can't plug in directly from the Xbox to the Surround Sound can I? It has to go through the DVD player?

At the moment that one cable that isnt plugged in to anything (As per the instruction booklet) is the yellow cable. What exactly are each colour for?

I tried plugging in the red and white one from the Xbox cable into the back of the DVD player rather than the TV and couldn't get any sound, though the picture was showing fine.

Yellow phono is video
Red and white phono is stereo audio

I have a similar setup, but with optical cable from SkyHD to the surround sound box. Also, a loop back cable from audio output on the TV to a stereo input plug on the surround sound.

So do I need some sort of new audio thing to plug the surround sound into rather than the DVD player?

I'm totally confused.

Right.

You are getting 2 speakers working left and right on the cable in stereo, because thats what stereo is.

You need either an optical from each into your dvd player, which is also your surround amp.

Or, if your amp doesnt have optical in, which i dont think it does, you need optical out from each device. To an optical switch box, via a optical to digital coax convertor, then from that with digital coax to your amps/dvd player digital coax in.

OR...

If all things link to tv via hdmi, and your tv has optical out. you can then go from your tvs optical out to your optical to digi coax convertor, then to your amp

Thats if you want surround working. Failing that, you need the red/white coax from each item to the dvd player/amp

get some "y" connectors, and have it so the phono's for your cable, go in at the same point as the phono's for your xbox.

Yeah, everything is connected via stereo hence why you're not getting anything more than mono/stereo - apart from the DVD which is connected via HDMI (carries 5.1/7.1 audio with it etc).

With the xbox you'll need to use the optical (or digital coax) connection to the DVD/Decoder and same with the cable box. Some DVD players/Cable boxes also provide the surround sound audio on multiple phono connections.

Other option is to use HDMI connections, that's if your combo DVD/Decoder supports HDMI inputs.

Got a model/make of the DVD/Decoder combo?

You can't, the onl connection in the picture above to the dvd/surround is a stereo one from the tv.
Sound might come out all the speakers but it's not proper 5.1.

It's not connected up the same as in the diagram then.

It looks like one of the older sony dvd/surround combos from the back, one I have in the house doesn't have any way of inputting a 5.1 source.

It's got digital coaxial in for 5.1 but I don't think the xbox has it out, you won't get 5.1 from the cable box.

How come I wont for the cable? No connections to be able to achieve it?

So basically I cant get 5.1 for either the xbox or the cable?

You can get it for the xbox, i think dan on here has an optical to coax converter so you can get them.

If the xbox is an hdmi one you could use that then a digital coax from the tv to the surround.
