You'd lose everything unless you were very careful with partitions.

Back everything up, start from scratch then copy it all back across.

If you make yourself a Linux partition then most distros come with GRUB which will allow you to dual boot your system into Windows or Linux, you won't be able to look at your Windows files under Linux though and vice versa because of the different file systems in use.

I found it was okay to use, but some things take some learning and getting used to. Simple enough to get up and running but I made the mistake of installing grub bootloader which I managed to f**k up which then meant I couldn't get into windoze , still a google search later that was fixed lol

If you learned how to use a PC using Linux then you'd find Windows really silly, and vice versa. If you have a practical use to use Linux then it's a good idea to learn it, Ubuntu and SUSe are good o/s's

Um, no Ed? what are you on about?

If hes using a typical Windows file system such as FAT32 or NTFS he can mount it under Linux fine and read/write. As you can see from my df output below, I've mounted my 1TB NTFS external hard drive under FreeBSD...

Sam, if you try a live CD such as ubuntu you can boot it up and have a good play around without making any actual changes to your hard disk, will be abit slow reading off the CDROM but its a good taster

Oh and if you use the ubuntu live CD, you'll also be able to see your windows drive on the laptop

Search for ubuntu and the latest one you ca donwload is both a live cd and an install cd.

what i am gonna do is get an external hd put all my shit on and like music and work etc then format the hd

to put this linux malarky on ill need it on a disk right? and then i can load it on and start from scratch?

It installs like all other o/s'. Just stick in the disk and let her rip...

You might want another PC that's working though so that you can search on Google to get tutorials on how to get the drivers and things installed.

Downloads as an ISO that you can burn to a disc with whatever software you usually use.

I wouldnt bother dual booting - not at this stage anyway. Maybe if you like linux but it just tends to get messy and you only really need 1 OS anyway... unless of course your a geek.

Live CD is your best bet mate - check out ubuntu as its prob easiest one to try out as it supports alot of hardware and installing software / updating is as noob friendly as linux gets (apt-get).

I use Linux for uni work and like it alot but its never going to replace windows because of a 'number of things' but the one that stands out is no more Call of Duty... or ANY decent gaming... Which wernt gonna happen.

You say your getting annoyed with Vista? thats probably because its a piece of shit. Just chuck XP back on - get yourself a ubuntu live CD - mount your windows drive to play your music / access your files from the windows partition and have a little play around see what you think. My bet is after a week you will be back on windows

I have a CD of ubuntu somewhere. Very good OS to be honest. was just put off cos of drivers etc and not been able to run certian programs i need.

Really nice clean, clear and fast OS tho!

I tried Ubuntu ages ago on my old Dell GX240 desktop, for some reason it crashed every so often (I think the problem was LAN driver related).

That sort of thing puts me off Linux, but having said that I may buy a cheapo box and install Ubuntu or similar OS on it and try again!

Hopefully things should be easier to grasp this time round as I use a Mac now on a regular basis, which is similar to Linux (for example, having to mount drives before using them and that).
