Let the car heat up with the cap off the expansion tank. Let it cool down then put it back on.

What was the reason for the new stat did you have problems before you fitted new stat?, squeeze all the main hoses with the cap off to try and expell trapped air, do you get coolant coming into the expansion bottle? are you sure your w/pump is ok .leave heater open cap off and run engine and squeeze hoses.

As Karl says you need to squeeze all the hoses to try and 'dislodge' any air locks, it could also be a failed water pump

changed stat because i thought it might not have been working and when lid is off expansion bottle and i squeeze pipe u have to squeeze really hard before it bubbles up

If (when started) the water pump has gone would there be no collant being pumped back into the header
Go have a look, coolant should be pumping back into the head via the top thin tube. You should see the coolant running out of it across the top of the tank.

the coolant is not being pumped back into the header, so sounds like the water pump,is this a big job?

Um yes, about £300 worth depending on damage , get your cambelt changed at the same time. Get it checked out but do not drive it!
