I wont explain why...
But, I heard (and Kirstys Dad swears by) that if you drill into the trunk and pour diesel into it every couple of days that'll take care of it over a short period of time (dependant on size).
Is this true?
I have heard of copper nails but that would be bloody obvious

i always cut round the bark a few cm deep and pour derv into a hole in the stump to kill the routs and rest of it once down

But my method you think would work OK?
Drill a hole into the centre of the trunk, very near the bottom, tube/funnel in there and "feed it" some dirty derv every couple of days

make sure it wont fall down though, I know it kills roots which will make it top heavey, unsure if it takes a lot longer with all the tree still in tact

Copper nails is what I use. The council put a cross with a chainsaw on the top of the trunk I suppose that's what that's for as well.

How big is the tree?
Killing it isn't going to reduce it's size or get rid of it, it'll still need cutting down...

I find a Stihl does the job alot faster tbh. then send it through a Musmax to get rid of the evidence

put round up in it, work fasters as the roots will absorb it quicker, and wont leave any oily residue down the tree.

Roundup doesn't work when applied to the roots. It is a glyphosphate based herbicide so needs to be applied to green leaves for it to be absorbed in sufficient quantities to halt photosynthesis. You could just wait till the next storm and pull it down with a tractor during the night and blame it on the wind haha

Well after we have felled a tree we drill the stump and fill with round up, although it's not the same roundup sold in homebase etc.., it's from an aboriculture suppliers, but under the round up label.
