If you had you probably wouldn't be in asking what one to use.
avast and avg are popular choices.

AVG and Avast are popular, but Avast is the one that works. AVG is only still popular because it used to be good and it got a good reputation but now it has gone massively down hill.
Off the top of my head, AVG now installs a "security toolbar" which is actually just Yahoo toolbar in disguise, and it lets in masses of Trojans. It has also become resource hungry.
There are more things wrong with it but I'm too shattered to remember them

Not installing the toolbar doesn't mean that AVG works fine
Deano - try Avast out and see how it runs then. Don't really have much to lose seeing as they're both free programs

That's fine bit if it's the only thing you've used for years and nothing else, you don't know what could be on there that it has missed.
Obviously no program finds every single infection, but some are much better than others. There are plenty of tests on the internet where someone has put a variety of infections on a PC and tested the same PC with various programs and documented which programs found the most.
