Is it possible to play videos, music etc. through my PS3 from my laptop? If so, how and is it easy to do?!

Also can I copy videos and music to the PS3's HD directly from my laptop?

If it's the right format (look on the PS3 specs) you can just copy them to a USB stick/harddrive (put them in a directory/folder called VIDEO) and play them. Otherwise you can stream using twonky or tversity etc although i've found it stutters a little (especially if someone is using the wireless at the same time) when using a wireless connection.

If you set media player to share media the laptop will show up as a video server on the ps3, no programs or usb sticks, as long as it's in the right format.

Most non hd stuff plays fine.

I've got a uPnP media server on my linux (search for mediatomb) which shares music and video across my network.

Music is perfect, but videos stutter like hell over wireless. Instead I just copy a video over. A full 700mb video takes about 3/4 minutes and then plays perfect.

Its a great set-up tbh, except my server has a crappy small hard drive which is nearly full and I don't want to splash out for a new one.

For windows, like John said, share it in media player, go to video on the ps3 home menu, choose the name of the server, choose folder, find it, play it. Really easy

Even 720p streams fine on mine, after converting from mkv to mpg. Have had a couple of 1080 things, but they're a bit more dodgy due to bandwidth usage

Thats how I did it. No 3rd party programmes or anything. Works better and is arranged as it is on your Laptop/PC that way too.

I play mine through the TVersity program, works a treat. Free download and very easy to set up, comes straight up on the PS3.

www.tversity.com

I used to use the MS media server on Windows, but it kept dropping out for some reason. Even thoguh it runs smoothly on my mates PS3 and 360.
