Just acquired a 500GB Maxtor external hdd. I've plugged it into my PC but it doesn't pick it up

Any ideas how to get it going?

Correct lead ?

If its powered by usb its probably a super short cable

my lead for my maxtor has two usb plugs on it, one for power, and another for power and data, strangely mind it works fine off just the power and data one

Its showing as on. The light at the back is on. It's plugged in at the mains

Maybe its unformatted then.

Check disk management, you may have to create a partition on it.

I've just downloaded drivers or something from their website. It's now picking up and i'm just formatting it now

have u got card reader in? sometimes u need to change the drive mapping
