Just changed the hard drive in my work PC; now when the power is connected the fans spin up immediately but really loud; ie faster than normal.
What could cause this? How do I fix it?

I've put the old harddrive back in and it's still spinning up to maximum

Is it a Dell?
Did you knock something out while changing the drive?

It is a Dell, now got the fan speed running correclty, I don't think he'd put the RAM cards in correctly. However, now its firing up but not booting up - and we're getting two beeps

Check in the BIOS if the fan speed is automatic or manually set.
However, what I normally do whenever I open up a PC that hasn't been opened in a while is...
Remove the CPU fan and heatsink, and clean out/hoover out any dust and crap that is lodged in the fan blades or in the heatsink, clean the heatsink and CPU surfaces with some isopropyl alcohol, apply some new thermal grease and put it back together.
It should then be a quiet fan again.

sorted kind of - the keyboard was unplugged
The new problem however, is that RAM Slots 3,4,5,6 don't appear to be working. Going through BIOS with ram cards in 3 and 4 shows them being in slots 5 and 6, but chaninging them to 5 and 6 still shows as 5 and 6 on the BIOS screen.
Also, it uses DDR2 cards but when I tried to use 1gb DDR2 it doesn't liek them but with 512mb DDR2 cards it does
