It all depends on the paint mate. Metallic, flat, flip... Best thing you could do is read all the guides you can find on the internet, learn the basics of getting even coats with spray cans, get the right equipment first time (decent gravity fed gun, big compressor, space heater, breathing mask, proper setup area with good lighting and dust free). Then to learn everything about the different types of paint go to your local paint shop (where you buy it from) and ask about everything. They work with it day in day out so know everything there is to know so its worth asking. Also its all in the preperation, if you have a good surface to start with the paint will be a better finish! Go to proper paint shops though not halfords or motor factors! Its never a branded product so there wont be a name for it you just ask for a colour, type of paint and how much you want e.g. vauxhall flame red, 2 pack paint, 5 litres. Thinners is just called thinners
Quick step by step guide though depending on what youre painting:
- Sand item down with finer and finer grade paper
- wash with warm soapy water
- leave to dry
- check the item over thoroughly to make sure its all smooth and flat
- if its not then re-sand it and re-wash it
- Leave item in a heated room so the items become warm so the paint sticks better
- wipe down with tack rags and leave for a while to dry again
- spray primer on in medium thickness coats at about 20cm away from the item
- its better to do more coats than one thick coat!
- Leave to dry in the heated room again (heat speeds it up drying)
- Wash thinners around the gun and spray through to clean it thoroughly
- mix paint (depending on the paint it varies)
- Spray the paint 20cm away with medium coats again
- Leave in the heated room again (longer the better at this stage)
- wash more thinners through the gun
- After atleast 24hours check dryness on a small hidden patch
- If its dry you want wet and dry paper a really fine grade and a bucket of warm really soapy water
- sand down the item using the wet and dry paper and water
- this will remove all the small lumps bumps and also remove the orange peel effect
- be careful of raising edges, creases or areas where the paint will get easily rubbed off due to being raised
- now you want a good cutting compound and preferably an electric polisher
- polish the item to give it a shine again
- and finally give a polish with a decent polish or wax to give it a really good shine and lasting protection
Hope this helps mate! But practise makes perfect!

Lacquers the biggest ball ache of all time! If it runs it'll strip the paint youve just put on and you have to sand it off and start again! Id suggest a lot of practise with lacquer first mate. To be honest though if you take your time doing the actual painting isnt that hard, its all in the prep work and finishing.
Edit: that guide was only a rough one anyway

what psi should i be spraying primers at what psi should i be spraying base/colour & clear/lacquer
anyone know anywhere cheap for arden blue paint ... thinners...lacquer..primer
when colour sanding can i sand arden blue or not as ive heard it disturbs the metalic flakes in the paint or something
or do i just sand after clear .. ??

You don't sand the paint mate. Lacquer over the metallic paint then wet sand with 1200 or 1500 if required.
Machine polishing will get out most slight defects though.

If you want to use it for painting you need something with a big receiver, anything under 50 litres will drive you insane waiting for it to re-fill every few seconds! 100 litres is just about right..
Best thing to do is look out for a second hand hydrovane compressor they are far more efficient than piston compressors and much quieter..
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/hydrovane-single-phase-compressor_W0QQitemZ300383362751QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Air_Tools_and_Compressors?hash=item45f03e5ebf
Well worth spending £300-500 on something like that!
I built my own hybrid: 25 litre receiver and a 2.5kw powered hydrovane:
I use it for painting at home.
