well its a 280 ltr currently housing mostly cichlids like gold rams, bolivian rams, thomas dwarf cichlids, discus and blue acara to name a few nut ive gone for the tropical marine look.... with the intention of converting to a marine later

Why not just start off straight away with marine if that is your end goal? It would save a lot of hassle!

well firstly there are some tropical fish i have always wanted to keep but never had a big enough tank, i.e discus and ghost knife fish to name a couple so im enjoying them at the min and in 2-3-4 years il convert it and the discus will be worth a fair bit when they are adults

Your discus should be in a taller tank than that.

maybe they should but he's only a juvenile, and guy at the local shop who's been keeping discus for 20 years and a personal friend said it should be ok as long as its not over run with other fish which will disturb the discus peaceful nature, to be honest he seems happy enough
