when i start up the computer it automatically goes into scandisk and then says..... scan disk encountered a data error whilst reading FAT on drive c....
this error prevents scan disk from fixing this drive.
then windows takes ages to load.. once its loaded its always freezing and i get another message saying unable to write to disk in drive c data or files maybe lost...
is it time for a new c drive?

Ive got the same problem. Itried formatting the PC but it gets to a certain percentage and comes up with "Error: bad cluster" this stops the formatting. I think i need a new hard disk.
Any ideas how i could format?

u cud borrow a drive off someone re install as new and then plug your existing fooked drive in as a slave then see if u can copy the mp3s off of it onto the borrowed drive, then format your screwed drive, and, providing its not proper fooked, partition it into 2 drives, one with a partition big enuff to hold all yer crap (mp3's films, grot) and then copy all of yer stuff back onto your drive int eh second partition, then remove your borrowed hard drive (being sure to remove andy 'evidence' b4 givingin it back to the lendee) and do a fresh install on the first partition.
problem solved.
tedious yes but works i can tell you from experience.

My HD did same just stopped workin, bad clusters. Scan disk wont really fix em take ages, new disk only around £50. Had new disk did same again after few weeks. Problem I had was that there was a virus in the BIOS, Norton wouldn't find it. What I'd do is get a new drive and re-write the BIOS, download up to date version and flash it over the top to write out any problem that could be in there. Worked for me, but got a new machine now anyway.

Super_si you can have mp3s for as long as you want - that is the gayest thing i have ever heard, if you are not infringing copyright you can have them for ever, i mean what next, you can only keep exe files for 2 days or bill gates himself will come round and shag you in the bum?? - get your facts straight b4 you poke yer tounge out at me!!!!!! jesus christ!

nah man i aint got no gripe - its just that saying sumthin that aint right is misleading and then saying that you know it to be fact is even more misleading, i mean if you say somehtng that is blatently wrong and someoe corrects you in a humerous but not overly offensive manner, to randomly look for a photo off their website with which to humiliate them(an not even get them) is a bit of a low tactic really, if you are wrong you are wrong, there is no need for childishness, just a simple, I appologise humbely for my error and will never question your wisdom on this matter again, thats all i wanted -

i cant be arsed to read all the post so i dunno if someones sujested this already.
LLF (low level format) you can go to www.downloads.com and search for it, pop it on a floppy disk and this is wipe the drive
then follow with a normal format
fdisk
format again
install os
or
just install os again and hope for the best
a bad cluster is when your hard drive has a damaged part of the drive. a llf with eraze the date on the bas sector/cluster and hopefuly enadle it to be restored.
also check for masterboot sector and boot sector virus's cause i got one and it killed a 75gig hard drive.
any more help u2u me. im not a computer systems configoration engineer for nowt! hahaa
