My parents own a piece of land which hosts a huge tree which overhangs part of a street. They have received a letter from the council that it needs to be dealt with.
A guy came to look at it this morning and quoted £600 for cutting it down and getting rid of it etc, however when asked what sort of tree it was, he didn't seem to know.  My dad seems to think that in some instances, depending on the sort of tree they will do it for no fee as there is money to be made from the type of wood etc.
Does anyone have any experience or advice when it comes to something like this?
I'll be taking a picture later on to give you a better idea. Cheers!

Maybe just ring a few more companies and see what prices they say?

Unlikely to make money from the wood unless it's something exception and of a decent size.
I'd probably get a second quote though, someone who cuts down trees ought to know what sort of tree it is

He's been browsing the yellow pages this morning so I'll see what he has found out later on.
It's more a question to see if anyone knows if there is such a thing as where they do it for free and make their money from the tree itself.
If it has to be paid, then so be it, but just wanted to see if anyone else has had experience with this sort of thing.

Does your local council not have a contractor that you could request a quote from 
I remember a few years back my nan had a tree taller than that, council asked her to remove it and she got them to do it for very little in comparison to other quotes she got.

get the pikeys round. couple of cones, climb up the tree and cut the branch off.
would take them 5 minutes probably.

I'd definetly do that myself, fuck paying £600 to cut a few brances. Just shout timber.

Dont think you can just "hire" one, I needed to show my NTPC just to buy one ?
I would call / Write to the counsil and ask what the problem is, if it just overhang it will be a small job of raising the crown.
Do you have anymore info, take a proper pic and I will tell you what tree it is

I'd get a few quotes if I were you. Rogue Traders had a story on this sort of thing a while back where some jobs really only cost like 10% of what some rip off merchants charge people.
When you have several quotes then you can get an idea of what the average price really is.

I used to be a tree surgeon assisant and it would defo need a road closure to fell it but just to chop the over hang then it'll be ok. Only prob you have is if you chop off a big limb from one side then you will have to do another on the other side. £600 is a good price for that cos it'll have to be climbed, prod a days job with someone good.
