Basically, all I want to do is create a movie that has fade transitions between jpegs with a song behind it. I need to make something for my band.
Can anyone recommend a decent, easy to use piece of software that I could get as a torrent?

Windows Movie Maker will do exactly what you have asked there. It's free and part of Windows Live Essentials if you don't have it on your Vista/Windows 7 machine!

Yeah WLMM is pretty good for basic stuff (and free).
