Am thinking about asking for one of these for xmas, does anyone have any experiences with one of these? I've been told you can like a lot of other things get the books for free.
If it's possible does anyone know how? after searching internet i keep hitting dead ends and websites wanting me to complete surveys etc

The newest kindle will do all formats including pdf. You can find most books on torrents, but I haven't really investigated it fully yet.
I'm looking to get a kindle for the same reason. I constantly buy £20 books and the kindle would pay for itself in no time.
Russ, although the ipad 'seems' great - it sucks for reading books on really and can't do much more that my laptop and iphone can do.

can you just drag and drop pdf files with the kindle, never looked into it to much but i thought there was some restrictions due to DRM

Lol Russ I wish I was loaded iPad not something I want to look at as have iPhone and iPod touch so iPad for reading would be a waste.
Kindle is good value for money just wanted to know where I could get the books for free, have checked torrent sites like piratebay but nothing comes up. Even typed name of book and torrent into google cannot find a thing

you tried torrentz.com or isohunt.com? Also warez-bb have a dedicated forum to ebooks and vaxhome.ws, although the latter tends to be learning material.
edit - have look at http://www.labnol.org/software/download-free-books-for-kindle/10990/ and http://consumerist.com/2009/07/how-to-load-up-your-kindle-with-non-amazon-ebooks.html

Just looked into it myself, Kindle 3 looks excellent and a relative bargain, think I might ask Santa for one.

Only £109 for the wifi only version, £149 for 3G + wifi, 3G is international so you can use a (basic) browser for free abroad.
