Obviously I want the biggest possible but whilst retaining the optimal viewing distance and without it looking stupid.
It will be on the wall so as to not seem 'too' obtrusive, which I find moreso when they are on a stand.
Either way the panel will be 1080p hooked up to Sky HD and Xbox.
Minimum will be 42"(already have 32" but time to upgrade) maximum will be 50". Distance from the front of the TV panel to head when seated is 9ft.
With the 50" coming in at between £50-100 more than the 42" variants price isn't really an issue. Ill post up a picture of the room when I get in tonight, trouble is pictures of rooms tend to make the room look smaller than it is so can be deceptive. The room itself is 16ft x 12ft.
Dont want buy a 42" and be wishing I got the 50" or vise versa. 
Range of 47" TV's isn't that good and the offers don't come up on them as much, plus 50" is only 3" more

Just get a 50" as thats clearly what you have justified in your head.

If you go with the TV size x 2.5 = optimal viewing distance, that gets banded round then you will be sat too close with a 50" but about the perfect distance away for a 42".
Depends how true that theory is though.

I'm only going for 40" in my living room with a similar viewing distance.

Based on TV size x 2.5 i'm over 1ft too close.
I have justified 50" in my head as at the end of the day im a bloke and so want the biggest I can afford but it might not be the most sensible and I know i'll get it in the neck from the mrs if its the wrong choice as she's saying 42"and they're always fucking right

Very if your not watching everything in HD.
So in SD it would end up being a bit pixelated then, that would do my head in. I would go for a 42" on that basis.

Cheers dude, i'm tempted by the 42" Panasonic(because its panasonic) and the 50" LG(currently had LG for the past 5 years and not had a single problem).
Plus I prefer the look of the LG with the thinner border.
In two minds about buying now or holding out to see if they get any cheaper in the 'sales' after xmas...

Yeh they will definately come down in price after xmas. End of stock etc. Personally im not too keen on Plasma's, but thats just personal preferance

Go for the biggest you can afford IMO.
Early this year we bought a 50" Panasonic... the missus hated the idea and said it would be daft, too big, overpower the lounge yadda yadda blah blah. I put my foot down and insisted and said she could stick to picking the wallpaper. When the TV was home and wall mounted she was like "hmm, looks small in here, you sure its not a 42?" 
I'm now saving for a 65" and the 50" will go in the kitchen when I can afford one

I sit probably fractionally further away but we have a 47". Very pleased we went for this size rather than a 40" (upgraded from a 32")

I sit about 7-8 foot from my 42" tv, and it is a little big for the room if I'm honest - but purely due to the picture on SD. For that reason, I'm planning to get a FreeviewHD box, and then all should be good.
As for the waiting until after Xmas bit - just bearing in mind the VAT rise - it won't make a huge difference (a £500 tv will go up by £15), but it will make the offers less appealing, unless of course the retailer takes the hit of the VAT increase themselves.
