parts come to about 80, if you do it yourself. and takes about 4 hours for an experienced DIY chappie to do... or at leasts thats how long its taken me to do my last one.
Providing the head doesn't need skimming

I got quoted 400 when mine went.
I took the 80 quid option and did it myself over 1 weekend.
Its not a hard job just a matter of taking bits off replace the gasket then put it back together the way it came off.

The headgasket of my car was done before I bought it. Cost £220 for head skim, new gasket, bolts, cambelt fitted.

you dont always need to skim it, but it is normally advised. It depends how long youe were driving with the head gasket screwed. Before my corsa i had a nova that that the head gasket went on. i did it on the cheap, and 2 months down the line it fucked the engine again, and i scrapped the car!!

You dont always need to skim it no. But u run the risk of the head gasket shaggin up again in a few months.
8v engines are easy as pie to replace. Its the 16v that are the buggers.
I got my head gasket replaced, and the head skimmed, including parts and labour for £280. So that is WELL overpriced.
As i say, 8v engines, easy as pie, do it yourself

I understood it as skimming was only required when the engine overheated due to gasket failure

You may as well have the head skimmed while its off, faulse economy if you dont, last time i did it it only cost £25 and was ready in a morning.
Have a go yourself, just follow the haynes manual to the letter and you wont go wrong.
If you do it yourself you MUST use new head bolts and head gasket and follow the correct sequence of re tightening the head bolts and they MUST be torqed up to the correct torque with a torque wrench.
Have a go,if you get stuck call a mechanic to finish it off,at least strip it down, save you some cash.
If you do it

What if you don't have the correct tools though? What tools are needed?

i dont have the correct tools,
that price also included, changing the timing belt, new water tanl, oil and new oil filter.
theres a fair bit of damage i think as the otherday the water feed blew up so the engin was running at bout 90mph with no water, i think the headgasket has beengone for a while now,
i know the guy who is replacing it so it may be cheaper

alot of mechanics wont touch it after someone else has had a play trying to fix it
