I bought a laptop that already had some software on it, which is potentially now unlicensed as the original license was not transferable from the person who originally purchased it.
If I paid to upgrade the software to the newest version, would they catch me out and say that I dont own a licensed original?

As VRS said, it's unlikely the software is licences to the previous owner, you should be fine.

Do you normally get issued with a new serial number when you upgrade, just in case.
