depends.
On the PC I use IE9 or Firefox if I need to open a pdf (because IE brings up a blank page).
On mac I use Safari mostly but will use Firefox if I want to view gifs, because Safari is shit for flash & gifs.

Disable the built-in PDF viewer if it's not working for you Ade, I sometimes need to do this in Chrome when things go a bit tits-up.
