just been farting on with the car, sorting out a few petty issues and whilst the header tank (coolant tank) was off i thought i'd stick it in the dish washer (useing finish 2 in 1 tablet ) its came out cleaner but far from what i was expecting
apart from buying a new one how else could i get it clean

I power hosed and bleached mine , its not good as new but its not manky no more, looks clean.
Try bleaching it over night

I sat it in bleach, then dishwasher tablet etc then got a cloth wedged it in and used a long screwdriver to scrape cloth around inside. It came up marvelous.
