hi all needing a bit of advice from a spark, ive got a big compressor, and according to the manifacture it needs a 16amp plug , commando plug ?? anyway, the way the garage is wired up is cable from bedroom right out,and into a twin socket, then a extension powers everything else, ie other sockets, lights etc, is there anyway to get this to work without having to run a mains board to the garage, as thats a absolute ballache as its all tarred path, thanks

I take it the twin socket is a spur off the upstairs ring circuit?

Is it a ring or radial from the bedroom?
1 or 2 wires?

I think so yes its running the grey cable that runs most houses.

If its a spur then you cant do anything to it. Because you cant spur off a spur or extend it etc. Only thing you could do is get a supply to your garage.

Which would mean i need to run a straight feed from the mains fuse box from the house?

Ideally you would run a ring from the fuse board, particularly if you want to run power tools alongside the compressor and everything else.

I would get a supply wired to the garage going to the small garage fuse boxes and then everything off that. That way you can have a light circuit, ring circuit and a 16amp socket for your compressor.
Obviously it would be more expensive but it would be better and safer.

The cable choice depends on how much power/what you want inside the garage and the length of the run.
If your looking at saving money, you could get an electrician to come out and fit the supply and you then wire up the stuff inside the garage. Depends how competent you are at doing it. Or you can run the cables etc and fit the things where you want them e.g sockets and then the electrician can make the final connections and test it all to be safe.

Cant you just wire a 16amp commado into your board in your house (own breaker)
then just knock up an extension lead out of some 4mm flex.
That way you avoid regs regarding putting a supply in your garage.

Whats the rating of the compressor?
Just because it requires a 16A commando plug doesnt mean it needs a 16A supply.
16A is the smallest type of commando plug, so if your compressor requires a 5-10A (most domestic compressors are less than 2kw) supply you can install a fused spur before your spurred socket (assuming its spurred from RFC) and come off that as many times as you like.

If it only requires up to 10 amp why not just stick a 13amp plug on it?

Replace 13a fuse in plug with a piece of steel bar?
You sure it'll pop them? That's a 3kw+ compressor!

Just make an extension and put a commando in the house somewhere.
How close is the garage to the house?

can you put this in laymens terms, not clued up on electrics at all, not that ill be doing it, just need to know and check if its possible to be done that way, am i picking it up properly?, instead of the 13a plug in the socket in the room, take a feed from the back of that socket, doing away with the 13a plug, and run that cable straight to the mains board in the garage? cheers
