Just got a new telly and have ran a usb cable through the wall therefore i can plug a usb pen into it to play movies etc.
The cable is 5 metres long and it works with usb pendrives.... I plugged my portable hard drive in though and its not picking it up?
It lights up but is not very bright...power issue ? Can anybody advise?

Probably not enough power. Does it the hard drive have two usb bits on it? Or a connector for a mains electric supply?

Portable hdd tend to have an extra usb plug on the cable to give them extra power
You'll be able to bodge it with an extra cable and a joiner

You plug the hub into your PC normally (or in your case the TV), and you connect your devices into it.
They cost less than £10, in fact I'm using one now (a Belkin powered one).

Probably current draw issue, you'll be getting voltage drop on the cable at that length.
Powered hub would sort it, as would putting the drive closer to the TV.

The USB hub I've got, it's the size of a credit card and about the thickness of 6 or 7 cards if that helps?

Do you not have a d8000? you can lift that off anytime yourself because it's so light.

Just ebay for a powered (make sure it's powered, ie: has it's own power supply, otherwise it'll be pointless) USB hub; plenty about. I nabbed a Belkin powered jobby years ago for about £4 off ebay, works a treat.

Yeh a d8000. Its superb just gutted about the usb issue. Cant be bothered with a wire out the side of it every time i want to play a movie! Usb pens work though so cable is fine

Thanks dom. I can get extra power to it but would need a 3 metre power cable to run through the wall! Hmmm not sure wether to try a splitter cable.... 1 that has 2x usb connectors that then connect to a hard drive

Why would you need 'a 3 metre power cable'? You'd position the powered usb hub at the end of the usb extension and as close to the hard drive as possible.
