Are they safe to use these days?

Do you need to protect yourself in anyway?

Just use common sense when downloading and if you use Windows make sure you have proper Internet security suite software - not the free shit people here use and then moan about when they have about 1,000,000 malware infections after perusing various porn sites

Someone on here may be able to advise on ways to make yourself less likely to be 'caught' for copyright infringement and such.

Used torrents for years and never had a problem. I use AVG which is free also and never had a breakdown!

Get downloading!

This may be a good place to start. I've never bothered personally, although I'm not a hardcore downloader.

Grab yourself peerblock and run it whilst using torrents but there are mixed reports whether it actually helps or not as it usually blocks legit seeders. And i'd suggest you limit your upstream, upload slots and set the seeding ratio to 0 (or as close to it you can get). Kind of against the ethos of P2P but hey ho......

Tbf there are better solutions for your warez, more so if you want to pay for it ie: Usenet etc

Should max out your connection.

I get 1.6MB/s on my ~15meg ADSL.

When I used Astraweb i found their limit to be around the 70-80Mb/s region (EU servers) when testing it on 100Mb line; certainly good enough for the average broadband user and used to max out my 20Mb connection without any issues.

John - Who's your Usenet provider?

I use a seedbox which I've setup, I download my torrents to the box and normally max out the connection. It also sits there and seeds my torrents for private trackers to get my ratio back. I then download over ftp over my 7MB ADSL which again maxes out. Typically takes a few minutes at most to download a full movie to the seedbox then however long it takes over my adsl.

In terms of protection, updated anti virus is key as well as a good amount of common sense. If you are going to use public sites like the bay then read the comments to see what people say about the torrent in question and I personally wouldnt seed on a public tracker any longer then I'd need to.

If you use private/ratio sites then you *should* have less problems in terms of malware/viruses, some sites only allow proper scene releases which should be free of these type of nasties. Bare in mind there is no guarantee.

All that peerblocker stuff is a good idea but lets face it, if Time Warner want to log you downloading their latest blockbuster and inform your ISP they are going to be sneaky about it. i.e. get a third party to do the work whos IP range is unknown (IMO).

Astraweb.

Use nzbmatrix for searching. I think you might have recommended both.

Just had a look on their website, they seem to offer a few different plans - which one have you gone for, to get those kind of speeds?

http://www.newsgroupreviews.com/astraweb-special.html

They call it a special offer but it's always on.

$11 is about £7.

nzbmatrix is a one off £7, there are other search engines but it is quite good.

sabnzbd++ for downloading, unrars automatically for you.

Sickbeard downloads TV shows automatically, couch potato for films, I don't find that works 100% of the time though.

Finished off with Serviio serving the media to my TV, I rarely have to lift a finger now it's all set up.

What exactly are newsgroups? Always heard of them, but never looked into it properly.

This is identical to my setup, minus the media server (using ps3mediaserver). How do you rate Serviio?

Primarily it's a 'message board' but users started to uploaded files for sharing and then came binary newsgroups (groups purely for file sharing).

Read the Wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet_newsgroup

I use Usenet too, posted about it before, should be able to find my post if you search it (for more info), John and Dom covered most of it though.

Just got mynzb for the iPhone, handy if you've got sabnzbd running, can search nzbmatrix and add nzb straight from your phone.
