Am I correct in saying that the glass that cracks when people drop them is called a digitizer?

I doubt any of them are TBH.

There is one website which claims to sell genuine parts as well but some of the stuff is just blatant copies.

You are best off buying the lcd/digitizer assembly rather than just the digitizer, unless you have a decent heatgun and the patience of a saint

First Gen is easier than the newer touch.

My thoughts exactly, I replaced the screen and the logic board on my old ipod video, that was really easy compared to the touch, was a nightmare, never ever again!

Did you lot just get impatient and rip everything off instead of taking it apart slowly?

I took my time, bit it's the fiddliest bloody thing I have ever done! Cost me about £160 in total for 2 screens then a new ipod Then she broke her phone screen, so I took that to a phone shop to have done as I didn't want the samefuck up again, was only £40 so wasn't even worth me bothering anyway really!

The tutorials with photos on iFixit make it look easy

Check this thread for an update in a few days time "I broke my iPod so I just spent £160 on a new one"

I dug the ipod back out my draw, took it to bits and plugged it an when it was laying across the desk, so put it all back together and it now switches on, but I think I may have damaged the screen taking it off as the bottom part doesn't respond to any touch. So I can't enter the passcode as the 0 doesn't work. Oh, and I cant restore it as the power button doesn't work

I think I've fucked it! Shame cos it would be ideal to have in my glovebox for the radio

Before:

After:

Touchscreen and that is all working fine, the only thing I noticed is that the home button seems to sit in a little more than it did so I don't know if that's because of the screen I bought (cheap eBay one) or I did something wrong somehow. Home button works fine otherwise.

Took me over an hour and a half for the whole job, it was the glue holding the battery and logic board down that pissed me off the most, bloody glue

Edit - forgot to mention, WiFi doesn't work (it didn't before I changed the screen so I didn't break it ), not sure how to sort that though - likely suspects are a) the logic board, b) the gold antenna in the corner, c) the case (which is kinda bashed TBH).

Yeah everything inside the iPod is quite fragile, designed to break easily so that you go spend the money on buying a new one IMO.

Good job Sam I found out how to get it into restore mode with just the home button, just need to wait for the battery to completely die so that the apple logo appears then I can restore it and use it hopefully lol.
