So I bought off eBay a secondhand first generation iPod Touch 16GB which I will be keeping in my car for sounds, the screen on it is cracked as it was dropped, and the back casing is dented.
I've ordered a new digitizer yesterday (was hoping it would arrive the same time as the iPod but it's only been despatched today ) so will fit that when it arrives.
I have some more questions for you lovely folk:
- On eBay and other online places you can buy brand new rear cases, I assume that there's no way to get a genuine one made as the iPod has the serial number on the back case?
- The battery bar thing at the top just shows the bar but I'd like it to show the percentage remaining like I can on my iPhone. I've not seen anywhere in the settings that allows you to do this, so I guess that's a no go?
- Sound effects are a bit cack, is there any way I can make them sound like on my iPhone (i.e. when you move to slider or lock it, etc.)?

Do they still have the serial number on the back of them? I thought they stopped that years back? If you took it to Apple they'd replace the whole iPod for you for about £80.

You need iOS 4+ to be able to enable battery percentage - make sure it's up-to-date.
Again, might need a software update to get the right sound effects?

It's running iOS 3.1.3, which iTunes says is the latest version for mine.
Bear in mind this one I got is only a first generation iPod touch so probably isn't beefy enough to run iOS 4/5 TBH.
I found something here which details how to enable the battery percentage without jailbreaking but it's not working for me using that iBackupBot software (isn't letting me save the .plist file for some reason) so I'm going to see if I can do it in Xcode instead.
That web page you linked to Ed says that it's £146 for a repair?

Only iOS 3 on the 1st gen.
Oh well, I only bought it for the car really, don't need to use the Internet or anything like that really (got my iPhone 4 for that).

My ipod touch is a 1st gen, it's way slower than my gf's 4th or 5th gen, whatever the latest one is! Sucks cos half the apps don't even work on mine

Yeah I know it's not the latest model but as said only using it for the iPod side of things - if I want to run an app I'll use my iPhone.
Gonna be connecting it up to my head unit using an iPod cable so it's all controlled from the head unit anyway TBH.
