I have bought a few USB hubs recently and they've been shite. Granted, they have been cheap eBay jobbies but for some reason, any device plugged into them doesn't seem to operate as they should or even at all. Any ideas why? Should I try a powered unit instead?

Stick to known brands like Belkin for USB hubs. Depends what you're using it for really.
I've got a poundland one that just doesn't work for data but is fine for charging my many USB devices

Most of the cheapies only support USB 1.0.

I have a USB 2.0 from Poundland and it does exactly that. Will charge devices but more demanding things like data transfer/webcam it just doesnt work. Could you lads link me to an eBay one that might do the job? x

I bought a powered Belkin 7 port USB hub, (same as the second link in Whittie's post) I think it cost me about £7 inc. VAT at the time - although I don't use the power adapter on it as I've only got a keyboard and external hard drive plugged into it.
It's been very good and hasn't given me any problems at all.
Before that, I bought some cheap and nasty piece of crap (also 7 port and powered) for half the price, had these annoying flashing LED lights (I thought they only did something when a device was plugged in to a particular port but it just flashed randomly and fucked me off after a while).
